Fast troubleshooting checklist
- Confirm the server address is exactly play.unstablesmp.gg, with no https, spaces, or slash.
- Check the live status above and look for maintenance or version announcements in the official Unstable SMP Discord.
- Make sure you launched Minecraft Java Edition 26.2.
- Read the exact error and use the matching section below before changing account or network settings.
- After one relevant change, retry once and note whether the message changed.
Unknown host or cannot resolve hostname
This error usually means Minecraft could not translate the hostname into a server address. Re-enter play.unstablesmp.gg manually and remove any protocol or punctuation copied with it. If the hostname works on another network but not yours, restart Minecraft and your router, then try your provider's normal DNS again.
A temporary DNS problem can affect some players before others. Check the official Discord instead of substituting a numeric address from an unverified website.
Outdated client or outdated server
Your Minecraft version does not match what the server currently accepts. Exit to the launcher, select a supported release, and reconnect. Use Java 26.2 for the current setup. If a later announcement changes the required version, follow it.

Connection timed out or no further information
A timeout means the client did not receive a response in time. If live status is offline, wait for recovery. If it is online, close bandwidth-heavy downloads, restart the game, compare without a VPN if you already use one and can safely disconnect it, and test a more stable wired or Wi-Fi connection.
Do not open random router ports just to join a public server. Players normally make an outbound connection, so server-hosting port-forwarding instructions are not the right fix.
Connection refused
The hostname resolved, but the destination did not accept the connection. This can happen during a restart, maintenance window, incorrect port entry, or temporary access restriction. For Java, remove any manually appended :25565 and save the hostname alone so DNS SRV can supply the port. Check status and wait a few minutes before retrying.
Failed to verify username or authentication servers unavailable
Close Minecraft and the launcher, sign out of your Microsoft account, then sign back in. Make sure the same account is not already connected elsewhere. If official Minecraft authentication services are unavailable, wait for service recovery instead of sharing account details with anyone.
You are not whitelisted or cannot access this server
First check that you entered the public-server hostname on this page. An allowlist message means the destination is restricting access; it does not establish why. Check current announcements and ask through the official Discord. Changing your graphics or DNS will not grant account permission. Never pay a stranger or share a sign-in code to bypass the message.
When to ask for support
If status reports online and the checklist does not help, include your edition, device, Minecraft version, server address, and the exact error message. Do not post your password, session token, home IP address, or account recovery codes.
Before opening a support request, compare your details with the official server IP and port reference. That prevents a copied website URL or outdated third-party address from hiding the real issue. Use the ready-to-copy support template to report the error and checks tried.
